I've got a show coming up in January - a two-person show at North Lake College. I'm pretty excited about it, not because I have a show, but because it forces me to get really serious about getting my studio cleaned out and set up. I got a big part of it done a couple of weekends ago - I hired a friend of my son's to haul about 6 tons or so of stone (the Great Wall of Laredo - leftovers from spring sculpture) out from in front of the garage doors. This is a large garage and will make a terrific studio if I can get it organized. So now I can haul all this stuff out onto the drive and sort it and organize it and put it back in at least a semblance of order. I don't have to have it done perfectly yet, but I am so tired of having to climb over stuff just to get the tools and supplies I need to do the simplest things. So this is a huge next step.
The other exciting thing about this show is that it also forces me to revisit the charcoal circles and see if I'm done or almost done or whether I still have a bunch more inside waiting to come out. I know I have some large ones I can do; I'm not so sure about the small ones. I would do a different series for this show, but the gallery director put this show together specifically around my charcoal circles versus the graphite drawings of John Calabrese, the other artist. That's the way it works, sometimes - taking a step back to a style or subject that you thought you were done with.
